The Girl Behind the Camera

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

I’ve been going through a self-discovery phase lately.
I see myself in every picture I take, little bits and pieces of me.
Because of that, I have no problem hanging images of “strangers”on my walls.
You see them. I see me.
It sounds a bit egocentric, I know. But I believe it’s only natural, like a mother looking at her child.

I then decided to go look at pictures of me- literally of me.
I was quite surprised.
I see Geoff all over them, since he took them.
In fact, I only see him.
It would be weird to hang these on the walls.
I mean, who is this girl my husband looks so tenderly at?
(and why is she half-naked in most of them?? hehe)

I guess she is the other me. The one everybody gets to see.
The girl behind the camera.
(now, really, I promise I walk around fully dressed most of the time)

Spotted: A Princess Wedding

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Every little girl dreams about having a princess wedding. Fact.
It’s only natural! After all, at age 5 most of what we know about weddings came from a Disney movie.
Then we grow up and realize that life is not always a fairytale.
We don’t wake up with perfect hair (at all), we don’t feel like every event in our lives deserves a song, we avoid wearing dresses 7 days a week, and our princes are not always that charming.
We grow up and realize that we don’t always feel like princesses.
Sometimes we rebel and think that we don’t want to be princesses anyways.

But then, it happens.
When you finally seem to have gotten over the whole princess thing, it just happens.
You meet a guy, you fall in love, you decide to spend forever together, you plan, and it happens.
That day happens.
That day, you know?
The day every girl is treated like royalty.
The day your prince seems more charming than ever.
The day you get to wear that perfect dress, with the perfect hair, and pair them up with the perfect smile.
The first day of your happily ever after.

“I am a princess. All girls are. Even if they live in tiny old attics. Even if they dress in rags, even if they aren’t pretty, or smart, or young. They’re still princesses. All of us.”- A Little Princess

I dedicate the following pictures to all the lovely real-life princesses out there.

The Yummyness:

The favors: chocolate cameos. Aw.

And here are 5 facts about this photo session:
1. It was done back in my hometown Curitiba, in Brazil!
2. The models are actually my 3 best friends. We grew up together, and the “bride” just got engaged!! I literally cried when she tried the dress on.
3. The dresses are designed by Rosa Clará (the lacey one), and Maggie Sotero (the one with ruffles). The bridesmaids dresses are by Maison Valentino, and are my all-time favorites.
4. We got to eat all the desserts served. All of them were made entirely of chocolate and truffles, and they were too good to be legal.
5. I was inspired by my two favorite movies: Marie Antoinette, and The Young Victoria.

Spotted: Kait & Micah + My Bucket’s List!

Friday, June 17th, 2011

While I waited for Kait and Micah to arrive, I was approached by this group of guys with cameras, and they asked if they could interview me.
Their question was, “What’s on your bucket’s list?”
I was quite surprised to hear what seemed to flow so naturally from my mouth.
I guess everybody has a bucket’s list, even me.
Here it is:

- Find out that I am actually a witch, and attend Hogwarts
- Be locked overnight at Barnes & Noble
- Live in Paris
- Have a pet piglet
- Have a house full of windows. Maybe even a glass house.
- Receive peonies for my birthday, with the number of bouquets matching my age (Geoff, rush! It will get too expensive when I’m 50!)
- Visit Greece
-  Have Bon Iver dedicate a song to me
- Live til I die in Brazil
- Learn how to sing
- Write a novel about a boy named Yan
- Be a ballerina for a day
- Create a fashion line
- Shoot 100% film
- Have super smart and funny kids
- Be in love forever

Yeah, I think that’s about it.

The rest of the day was completely different from that point on. I keep looking around me and seeing endless possibilities.
And I wondered what these two would want for their lives.
I hope they get it all.

Paola Gautier

Spotted: A caramelized apple wedding!

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

School’s out, summertime is in, and I am ready for it!
I can’t wait to travel like its going out of fashion, stay all day laying by the beach, eat like a fatty, spend some quality time with my man, and shooting amazing weddings ALL SUMMER LONG.

You’ve met Christina & Jordan on the previous post, but you haven’t seen them as happy as this:

Apple-decor, with touches of royal blue and orange.

Do yourself and your guests a favor, and hire a live band!
It was definitely my favorite part of the wedding. The guys from “No Limits” rocked the party from the beginning until the end.
Having a live band also guarantees that the bride and groom will actually enjoy their wedding- since everybody is so busy dancing, they give them more space.

Yes, I am the photographer who gets all emotional at other people’s daddy-daughter dances.
I can’t help myself.

P
